Taken by Walker Evans in 1936 as part of the Farm Security Administration- Office of War Information Historic Photograph Collection. Between 1935-1944, several photographers came through Hale County as part of Roosevelt's New Deal. Under the umbrella of the FSA (Farm Security Administration) they took photos to document the Great Depression, offering historians today an extensive pictorial view of life.

First Sergeant Luther Hubbard of Co. C, 26th USCT Infantry
Luther Hubbard was born in 1840 and served during the Civil War as part of the 26th U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) Infantry Regiment. He is pictured with a sword in his hand. The photo is dated to be between 1863-1865. Location: Hilton Head, SC; Folly Beach, SC; Beaufort, SC; Jacksonville, FL (notated on back)
